Bill Cameron has been involved in the business of journalism for some 25 years, beginning in the mid-60’s at what used to be the old Star Weekly magazine. From there he went on the Toronto Star newspaper followed by the position of associate editor at Maclean’s magazine.
In his own words, he then…"got tired of honest work" and joined Global Television in 1974, starting out as chief newswriter, moving on to entertainment editor and talk-show host and eventually working as a political reporter and senior news analyst and commentator.
In 1978, Cameron joined Toronto’s City-TV as a night news anchor; as he says… "my time there was not hampered by any types of hang-ups about journalistic decorum," and he has many stories to support this. A few years later he joined CBC’s The Journal as a documentary reporter/producer and anchor/interviewer. Currently, Bill Cameron is anchoring the CBC Evening News at 6:00 p.m. in Toronto.
Cameron has traveled extensively over most parts of the world and has a particular fondness for South Africa, where he has spent a great deal of time. He has covered wars, elections, poverty, great art (and bad art!), the environment, and a few other things he’d rather forget. He is a man with very strong feelings about what Canada ought to be doing on the international stage.
Bill Cameron is married, has three children, a golden retriever and currently resides in Halifax.
