Chris Braiden

Chris grew up in the town of Mullingar, Ireland and left school at age thirteen (he’s a quick learner!). He was determined to be a copper (his term) but before succeeding, he was rejected by police systems in: 1) Ireland, because he couldn’t speak Gaelic; 2) England because of a missing finger; and 3) Canada, initially, due to colour blindness. He was however, eventually hired on with the City of Edmonton and recently retired as a Superintendent after 32 years of service.

Throughout his career, Chris Braiden served in all aspects of operational and administrative work at every rank from Police Officer to Superintendent. He spent his last six years of service transforming the Edmonton Police Service around the philosophy of community policing. Evaluated by the Police Executive Research Forum, Washington, D.C., and the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family, his work has been described as the best of its kind in North America. To date, seventy-two organizations from several countries have visited Edmonton to observe the results. As well, Chris has carried out assignments with provincial, federal and state governments, and he has consulted and lectured internationally in Japan, France, Australia, China, Sweden, and extensively across North America.

Chris believes nothing great is ever achieved without passion. To Chris Braiden there is a huge difference between peacekeeping and law enforcement. The former is a cause, the latter a function. Chris has been described by others as a voice for change and a true pioneer in transforming the cultures of policing.

In 1993 Chris Braiden retired as Superintendent from the Edmonton Police Service, yet he continues to serve, teaching others about initiating and implementing change. As President of Chris Braiden Consulting Inc., he concentrates his efforts consulting and speaking to various organizations around the globe. Presentations are infused with the wit and humour of an Irish storyteller and the passion of one very grateful for life itself, combined with a genuine visionary insight into organizational change.

Chris lives in Edmonton, with his wife Valerie and their two sons, Declan and Conor.
