David K. Foot, Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto, is co-author of the best-selling books Boom Bust & Echo 2000: Profiting from the Demographic Shift in the New Millennium and Boom Bust & Echo: How to Profit from the Coming Demographic Shift. (with Daniel Stoffman, Macfarlane Walter & Ross, 1998, 1996). These books reflects his current research interests which lie in the numerous interrelationships between economics and demographics and in the resulting implications for both private and public policy, especially in the Canadian context.
Following his undergraduate degree in Australia and his doctorate in economics from Harvard University, Professor Foot's research involved projections and analysis of the Canadian and Ontario economies, mainly under the auspices of the University of Toronto's Institute for Policy Analysis. Subsequently, Professor Foot focused on the economic impact of demographic changes, often a neglected determinant of the challenges to economic performance and policy. His research has resulted in contributions to a variety of specific policy areas, such as, education, youth unemployment, housing, recreation and leisure, promotion and retirement, savings, labour force growth, immigration interprovincial migration, government expenditures, and intergovernmental relations.
A number of these themes are explored in his previously published books, The Over Forty Society (1988), Canada's Population Outlook: Demographic Futures and Economic Challenges (1982), Provincial Public Finance in Ontario (1977), Public Employment and Compensation in Canada (1978), The Compensation Decisions of the Anti-Inflation Board (1980), and numerous articles in professional journals, books, and the news media.
Professor Foot's contributions to public policies have also included research and submissions for many governmental commissions such as; the Ontario Task Force on Mandatory Retirement (1987), the Vision 2000 Review of Ontario's College System (1990), and numerous consulting and conference assignments for both public and private organizations.
Finally, Professor Foot is a two time recipient (in 1983 and 1992) of the University of Toronto Undergraduate Student Teaching Award and in 1992 received one of the nation-wide 3M Awards, which recognizes outstanding Canadian university educators.
