Dr. Albert Bandura of Stanford University, described Gary Latham as a "masterful field researcher." His creative accomplishments include: the first training program to teach employees skills in self-management; the situational interview for selecting employees; and behavioural observation scales for performance appraisal.
As an author, Gary Latham is also respected. His books include: Increasing Productivity Through Performance Appraisal, with Dr. K.N. Wexley; A Theory of Goal Setting and Task Performance, with Dr. E.A. Locke; Developing and Training Human Resources in Organizations, with Dr. K.N. Wexley; and Goal Setting: A Motivational Technique That Works, with Dr. E.A. Locke, which has been translated into Hebrew and Japanese.
Currently Secretary of State Professor of Organizational Effectiveness and Professor of Organizational Behaviour, University of Toronto, Dr. Latham holds a B.A. in Experimental Psychology, (Dalhousie) 1967; M.S. in Social-Industrial Psychology, (Georgia Tech.) 1969; and a Ph. D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology (Akron) 1974. Before coming to U of T in 1990, Latham was Ford Motor Research Professor and Chairman of the Management and Organization Department at the University of Washington in Seattle.
He also worked for several years in private industry in the US, which is reflected in his client list, featuring well-known companies on both sides of the border - Bank of Montreal and Lawson Mardon Group Ltd. in Canada; Scott Paper Co., Weyerhaeuser Co. and Seafirst Bank in Washington State in the US.
On the topic of Performance Management, Gary has been interviewed in articles for The Toronto Star and for radio programs across Canada, such as, The Andy Barrie Show on CFRB. Dr. Latham has also served as an expert witness in many human rights cases in Canada and the US.
