Tony Wilson-Smith recently celebrated twenty years in journalism, during which time his achievements have been many and remarkable. And he has just been appointed the Director of On-line Media for MacLean Hunter, where he will be responsible for developing the content and direction of their online activities.
A native of Montreal, Wilson-Smith began his career as a political reporter and editor for the Gazette. He then moved on to Maclean’s and spent three years as the magazine’s Quebec Editor. In 1986, he became Maclean’s first Moscow Bureau Chief, reporting from the then-Soviet Union's 15 republics. Over the next four years, he also managed to keep up his international coverage of major events, visiting and reporting from more than 20 countries, from Haiti to Afghanistan.
Wilson-Smith returned as Ottawa Bureau Chief for Maclean’s in 1990 and has held a ring-side seat to the nations major events ever since. In 1996, he demonstrated his unique knowledge of the inside workings of government with the release of the year’s most talked about political novels,“Double Vision: The Inside Story of the Liberals in Power”, (Doubleday) 1997, which he co-authored with the Globe & Mail’s Ottawa Bureau Chief, Ed Greenspon. The book was an immediate best-seller receiving much media attention and critical acclaim.
