Chris Wood

Veteran Canadian journalist Chris Wood has interpreted events in the Middle East, South America, Europe, and the United States of America for readers and radio listeners across Canada. He has been both National Editor and Business Editor for Maclean's magazine. Since 1984, Wood has brought incisive analysis and colourful reporting to topics as diverse and challenging as international trade, ethnic feuding, private faith, violent youth crime, and Canadian unity. In 1993, Wood concluded a posting in Texas as Dallas Bureau Chief, from where he covered the violent stand-off with religious zealots at Waco, the aftermath of the Los Angeles riots and the grinding poverty of Mexico's northern industrial belt. As Maclean's Vancouver Bureau Chief since August 1993, he has applied his characteristic sympathetic but frank reporting style to both the deeply touching story of ALS patient Sue Rodriguez's assisted suicide and the social transformation of an increasingly Asian Vancouver. Wood's hallmarks as a journalist are meticulous accuracy of fact--and a clear-eyed ability to extract meaning from the confusion of onrushing events. As a speaker, he takes his analysis beyond the scope of his reports in Maclean's and elsewhere, to draw conclusions that relate directly to his audience.
